Towns get P100T each for food production

CAPITOL yesterday released P100,000 as financial assistance to each town in the Province for the implementation of “Saksak,” an acronym for the “Sinanduloy sa Kabusog, Sinanduloy sa Kahimsog.”

The program aims to increase harvest, provide nutritious food to every household and make full use of underutilized agricultural lands in the Province.

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia called on local government units (LGU) to cushion the effect of the rice price crisis on the public.

The Provincial Government also released additional P100,000 as financial aid to any LGU who will decide to run a National Food Authority (NFA) outlet.

Distribution

The NFA approved the request of Garcia and local officials to allow municipal welfare offices to distribute low-cost rice to make it accessible to the “poorest of the poor.”

The NFA limits the allocation to 30 bags of rice per week to each town.

Capitol, LGUs and NFA earlier entered into a memorandum of agreement for the undertaking.

Funds released by the Province will be considered as trust fund under a separate subsidiary ledger for an LGU-operated NFA outlet and “Saksak” program.

The municipal accountants are also required to submit a monthly financial report of the project to the provincial accountant for consolidation.

The city or the town social welfare offices are tasked to identify the list of eligible beneficiaries.

The town and city mayors will order their social welfare officers, and accounting and health officials to promote, monitor and evaluate the project.

Each town will have to formulate policies and resolutions re-enforcing the implementation of the project.

In yesterday’s event, Garcia also led the blessing of the new service vehicles for Capitol department heads and the signing of the memorandum of agreement between the Capitol and town mayors for the Goats for Wealth Enhanced Nutrition project. (GMD)
