Friday, April 25, 2008 VSMMC ‘better off under Capitol’
SUPERVISION of the primary and secondary services of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) is better left to the Provincial Government, Cebu Provincial Board (PB) Member Peter John Calderon said yesterday.
Calderon, chairman of the PB committee on public health and social services, told reporters that Capitol has continuously offered to take over services of the government-run hospital, as mandated by the Local Government Code.
The last time the Provincial Government discussed the issue with Department of Health (DOH) 7 Director Susana Mada-rieta was last year yet.
Resistance
Calderon said Capitol did not force the takeover of services because of the resistance of VSMMC employees.
But the issue has been revived because of the controversy over the spread of a video of an operation conducted by VSMMC.
When asked whether Capitol will press with the takeover of VSMMC’s services, Calderon only said that the controversy has nothing to do with the devolution and the proposal was always on the table.
“We will wait until they’re ready,” he told reporters yesterday.
“In terms of supervision, the Provincial Government may be able to supervise it better kay naa raman sa duol,” Calderon said.
VSMMC is under the supervision of the National Government through the DOH. (JGA)
