Monday, April 28, 2008 UC acquires birthing equipment
THE University of Cebu has recently purchased two state-of-the-art birthing simulators for the College of Nursing and Midwifery.
Each of the two sets of the new acquisitions come with a computer interactive neonatal simulator (newborn Noelle) with virtual instruments and a maternal and neonatal birthing simulator (adult Noelle) also with virtual instruments.
It was purchased from the Gaumard Scientific Company, with each set pegged at $16,790. Including handling and freight fees, the university’s newest facility is worth almost P1.5million or roughly $35,000.
Gaumard also sent their representative, Scott Anthony Peters, for a five-day demonstration for the clinical instructors and students starting on April 7.
“One of the unique features of the Noelle is that it is a birthing simulator which allows instruction and training in an actual birth process. It’s a whole lot of learning experience for the students,” shared clinical instructor Shiela Marie P. Serrano, RN, of UC Banilad Campus.
The facility will soon be used by level two, three and four of the College of Nursing, while the Midwifery enrollees can use the Noelles for the birthing process and the other parts of the model which can be practiced for IV treatments and repair of certain lacerations.
Indeed, even this early, the new facility proves to be proactive in training and allowing the Midwifery and Nursing undergraduates to familiarize the birthing process, neonatal care and other related nursing procedures.
