Monday, April 28, 2008 Lancers take Game 1 in VAAA finals
THE big men of the University of the Visayas Green Lancers stepped up huge in crunch time to move a game away from exacting payback after winning Game 1 of the best-of-three 2008 VAAA championship, 85-82, over the Southwestern University Cobras last Saturday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Power forward Michael Luga finished with24 points and the 6-foot-11 center Greg Slaughter added 22 to frustrate the Cobras, who are seeking their second title since reactivating their basketball program two years ago.
The Lancers turned to their post players when their wing and gunners failed to out-hustle the stubborn Cobras.
Defensively, however, the Green Lancers were successful in containing SWU’s biggest threats, Elvid Poligrates and Alfred Belande, who were the vital factors of the Cobras’ win over UV during the 62nd National Students Basketball Championship last March.
The Lancers were looking to end the series against the Cobras at press time last night.
Meanwhile, the Asian College of Technology Cyber Tigers nabbed the third place trophy after beating the University of San Carlos Warriors in the knockout game for third place. (RCM)
