THE makers of the free monthly Bite magazine is leading the way in urbanizing local art and paving the trail for a more free form of expression.
It spawned a kind of sub-culture that is street-wise and inspired by those aerosol-armed spray painters of graffiti art.
David Harris, ruler and inspiration of Bite, led a group of co-conspirators in holding “Graffiti Expressions” on one hot Friday night at the Loft in IT Park, Asiatown.
On that evening, art merged with function. What replaced the usual canvas were pairs of Converse All Star shoes and Levi’s 501 jeans.
The wearable sets were decorated and jazzed up by Cebu’s local artists, designers and other personalities.
Taking center stage were the works of accessories designer Golda Marthe King, lensman Jon Unson, production designer Remton Zuazola, hotelier Manni Osmena, musician Cattski, and sportsman John Pages.
Equally whimsical in their output were jewelry designer Cheryl Barnes, footwear designer Paco Raterta, reigning Ms. Cebu 2008 Sian Maynard, stylist Mark Masa, Tom Barlow of Bliss Accassories, fashion designer Edwin Ao.
Also in the limelight of works were TV personality Alexis Yap, make-up artist Romero Vergara, jewelry designer Butch Carungay, POW designer Jethro Estimo, German artist Andreas Lochner and this writer. But that’s not all.
Amidst live graffiti painting, also happening was the awarding of winners in the 2008 Graffiti Expressions, a contest on digital graphic art based on graffiti style. The theme was “the environment.”
Capping the night was a live auction of those artist designed one-of-a-kind pair of shoes and jeans.
With a thrust on the environment, the proceeds of the auction went to Greenpeace Cebu.
