UV gets even with SWU, takes VAAA title

THE University of the Visayas Green Lancers completed its payback mission after finishing a two-game sweep to win the Visayas Amateur Athletic Association (VAAA) title over the hapless Southwestern University Cobras Sunday evening at the Cebu Coliseum.

Eduardo Arda came out as the surprise package for the Lancers as the third year power forward went 9-of-13 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line to lead all scorers with 23 points and help UV defeat SWU, 84-71, in Game 2.

Arda’s splendid performance gave UV’s main man inside the paint, Greg Slaughter, more elbow room to display his dominant game over the shorter Cobras.

Slaughter finished with 16 markers and was unanimously voted as the league’s Most Valuable Player because of his steady performance from the start of the tournament.

SWU started the game with four unanswered baskets but UV came up blazing with 10 straight baskets and never looked back from there.

The Cobras tried to beat the taller Lancers with their outside game but nailing down 10 triples were not enough to stop Arda and Slaughter from scoring at will at the post.

UV’s championship run earned them P50,000 worth of sports equipment courtesy of BAP-SBP regional chief Michel Lhuillier and regional director Raul Alcoseba.

SWU, on the other hand, received P30,000 worth of sports equipment, while third placer Asian College of Technology (ACT) and the University of San Carlos (USC) will split the remaining P20,000.

UV (84)—Arda 23, Slaughter 16, Lanete 12, Villanil 8, Diputado 7, Tancongco 7, Dennison 6, Sendrijas 2, Luga 2, Akad 1. SWU (71)—Litorja 12, Zanoria 12, Armecin 12, Maguate 10, Django 10, Jalandoni 5, Canonigo 4, Gianchand 4, Belande 3, Poligrates 2. Quarters: 22-14; 38-32; 58-48; 84-71. (RCM)
