Yap nabs Rose Chess title

FIDE Master Kim Steven Yap ruled the Rose Pharmacy Chess King Open in the 2008 Cebu Summer Chess Festival at SM Entertainment Plaza last Sunday where he bested 95 other competitors.

Yap, playing in white pieces, ended the last game with a draw against National Master Rogelio Enriquez over a King’s Indian in 27 moves in Board 1. He finished the tournament with 6.5 points after seven rounds to take home the title and the P3,000 top purse.

Enriquez, Eden Diano, Richard Natividad and Allan Salientes tallied six points each but Enriquez snatched the second spot and the P2,000 cash prize when he prevailed in a tie-break point with 31.5 against Diano’s 27.5. Diano settled for the third spot and the P1,000 prize money.

Natividad, who had 27 tie break points and Salientes, who had 25 were at fourth and fifth places, respectively. They also received cash prizes.
Diano won over Adonis Buenaventura in a Sicilian.

Natividad, using Slav Opening, beat Miguel Banebane in Board 2 in 49 moves, while Salien–tes, edged out Aller Somosot in 41 moves in Board 4 in their last round pairing.

Meanwhile, in the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association monthly tournament, Daniel Lorenzo Miñoza and Shawn Patrick Osorno took the titles in the Kiddies and Juniors division, respectively.

Miñoza took the top plum against John Francis Balbona via a tiebreak after both players tallied 4.5 points apiece after five rounds in the kiddies division.

John Paler and Aldrin Barade salvaged the third and fourth places, respectively.

In the juniors division, Osorno took the top spot with five points.

He was followed by Ma. Theresa Letigio, who finished with four points.

Kyle Sevillano settled for third place after registering 3.5 points. (NSM)
