Barrita: Final solution
By Eddie O. Barrita
Small Bites

FORMER Speaker Joe de Venecia said the shift to a federal system is the “final solution” to the Moro rebellions in Mindanao.

Will they lay down their arms once we’re a Federal Republic of the Philippines?

***

Sixteen senators now support a constituent assembly (con-ass) to amend the Charter and adopt a federal system in which the Senate would have 75 members and the House of Representatives, no more than 350 members.

Is this their idea of solving the country’s unemployment problem?

***

Toledo City has been proposed as Central Visayas’ state capital.

Proponents must have known Toledo City has been the region’s registration capital for sports utility vehicles (SUVs).

Expect a state capital crawling with SUVs.

***

Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña won’t mind having Toledo as Central Visayas’ state capital.

But he said the Capitol must be moved there and “the governor should move out also.”

No wonder he won’t mind at all.

***

Speaker Prospero Nograles said the House leadership decided to defer plenary action on the “weakened” bicameral conference committee version of the Cheaper Medicines law.

For our lawmakers, everything, including a law on cheaper medicines, can wait.

I hope the sick can wait too.

***

Sen. Mar Roxas has urged the government to allocate a P1 billion special fund to buy cheap but quality medicines for hypertension and diabetes from India.

He knows the sick can’t wait for the law and need the cheap medicines now.

***

Sen. Richard Gordon said he’s willing to forego his presidential ambition if Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia, “a presidential material,” seeks the presidency in 2010.

He said he can be her running mate.

Is there a better way of getting Gov. Gwen’s support in the 2010 elections?
