Sisos pick up after Palaro

BERNARDINE Niño Siso is hell-bent on making up for his defeat in the Palarong Pambansa as he sailed through the first round of two age divisions of the Guillermo Jose Jr. Memorial Cup yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts.

Siso, who blundered in the final round of the singles event of the secondary boys division in the Palaro, was back in his old form when he trounced Wilmore Barao, 6-1, 6-0, in the Boys 16 division. Later, his lethal shots proved to be too much for Dale Estora, whom be clobbered in a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Assignment

Playing in his first year in the Boys 16 division, Siso is seeded seventh, but is unseeded in the Boys 18 division.

His second-round opponent in the Boys 16 is still not determined, but he will be taking on Marco del Rosario for his second round assignment in the Boys 18 division.

Meanwhile, Siso’s sisters Sallydine and Sally Mae, are also taking part in the competition. Sallydine is also fresh off a stint in Palaro, where she claimed silver and bronze medals in the secondary girls team event and doubles action.

Sally Mae, on the other hand, the youngest of the tennis brood, who also has a double entry and will start her bid today, just arrived from her last international stint for the summer in China.

Sally Mae took advantage of the opportunities that the Philippine Tennis Association had opened up for her as the China event and another International Tennis Federation-sanctioned competition in Jakarta, Indonesia earlier this summer, are all for the Under 14 division and this will be her last year in that age bracket.

Event

Sally Mae, who was the winningest Filipino netter in China, is expected to bring the country’s colors anew as the Asian 4-under event returns to Jakarta in July.

Meanwhile, Sally Mae will be competing in the girls 14 and 16 divisions, while Sallydine will take part in the Girls ‘6 and 18 classes.

The Sisos are varsity players of the University of San Carlos South Campus and are supported by Dunlop and Jonathan Guardo.

The other Cebuanos taking part in the Guillermo Cup are Bernardine’s Palaro teammates Larry Antigua and Israel Abarquez with Dingdong Cañete. (MCB)
