Thursday, May 01, 2008 Utzurrum: Quota’s annual Santacruzan By Chinggay V. Utzurrum The scene
THE month of May is synonymous with flowers, feasts and fair ladies, who participate in the many events this month like the Flores de Mayo. And then there’s the Santacruzan, a devotion that commemorates the finding of the Holy Cross by St. Helena and her son, Constantine.
The Quota Club of Cebu has taken this fund-raising project seriously, each year becoming more meaningful than the last.
This year, live-wire Quotarian Tina Corominas has again embarked on this much-awaited task, and gives us the info that it will unfold on Sunday, May 4 at the Grand Convention Center.
But more than the socials and the style, Quotarians are happy to set aside a meaty sum for their project, the hearing and speech-impaired children of Cebu, who have benefited tremendously from this.

When their beloved Math mentor, Mercedes Yap-Gomez quietly slipped into town from Australia, her students somehow “smelled” her presence and wasted no time planning a quick-lunch at Café Georg.
Well-attended was the event. The group has nine classmates and three teachers, and what a cacophony of sounds they made, the what, the who, when with whom kind of questions, which yielded some interesting and surprising answers.
So, madam Gomez, when is your next trip here? We still have more questions than answers!

When “eventologist” Richie Mendoza is involved with an activity, you can be sure it will have the pomp and pageantry of a hip-happening, As when he organized the grand opening of Makan Asian Spice restaurant at SM City Cebu.
The theme was obviously Asian with its mini-cocktail tables wrapped in batik, and a dance sequence with Indonesian touches. The food? As the name suggests, Asian spices were very much in the menu. We have to give our kudos to chef Lany Garcia and our warm congratulations to youthful proprietor, Edwin V. Ortiz, entrepreneurial son of lawyer Mario Ortiz and Lita Ortiz.
The mood was more festive, but formal with the presence of special guest, Senator Miguel F. Zubiri, who inaugurated the resto by banging a Muslim gong mounted on a frame of flowers.
The festivities were just beginning. Cheers to you, Edwin!
