Thursday, May 01, 2008 Carcel rules Shell Superkart mini ROK
TWELVE-year-old Juan Antonio Carcel is slowly making a name for himself in the international scene in kart racing. This year, more international races are lined up for him.
Before he leaves however, Carcel, the karting sensation of Paref-Springdale, is trying to stamp his class in the local competitions.
Last weekend, Carcel added another feather in his cap when he dominated the mini-ROK class of the second leg of the Shell Superkarting Series last weekend at the Kartzone in Mabolo.
Carcel won the race over Christian Peters and JT Gullas, who settled for second and third, respectively.
His sister Kali, was in the running for the top three spots, but was left behind in the last few laps of the race.
Antonio dominated the race in all cylinders as he was on top of the field in the qualifying races in the morning. He topped the first and second heats and extended his dominance down to the final phase of the race, where he easily tackled 20 laps around Kartzone. Apart from this, Tonyo also registered the fastest lap of 28.7 seconds.
Antonio actually skipped the opening leg of the yearlong series last month, but made up for it with last weekend’s emphatic win.
He missed last month’s competition as he took part and won in another race in Carmona, Cavite. Carcel bested fellow Cebuano Jette Calderon and Asian karting champion Christian Gaddi for the crown in that race.
Carcel is expected to extend his dominance in this division when he competes this weekend for the third leg of the race, still at Kartzone.
Competing in local competitions is Carcel’s jumping board in preparation for his international stint. He will be competing in Macau in June. (MCB)
