Thursday, May 01, 2008 Chiongbian: Taking a rest in Labor Day By Edgar R. Chiongbian Teetime
HAPPY Labor Day to all you hard working folks! I have often wondered what would be more appropriate to call this day. The International Labor Day or should it be, the International Rest Day! That’s a labor of the mind, so I rest my case, ahem.
The golf segment of the Copa de Casino Español tournament will tee off tomorrow at Alta Vista in Pardo. Already signed up are 130 players, but there are still some slots available. So if you’re interested in joining, call Rudy Rubi at 253-1260. The Copa six sports extravaganza ends May 2, with the awarding of all sports events being set up with a sumptuous meal tomorrow night at the Salon de España ballroom of the Casino Español.
All sports events are held at the Casino Español premises except for golf.
Because of the clamor of the golfing members to play in other courses, the golf venues will be rotated around the different local golf courses in Cebu.
The golf courses at Mercedes Plantation in Bogo and Club Filipino in Danao are being considered for next year’s Copa de Golf venue.
Tee off time sheets have been posted at Alta Vista so if you want to check your schedules, just call up the registration desk at Alta Vista or Casino Espanol. If you don’t have a team, you will be put together with other players to form a team. The format is team play of four players, three to count using the Stableford System of scoring.
The field will be divided into A, B and C classes. One KIA car will be up for grabs for anyone making a hole-in-one on holes 2 and 8, while a Skygo motorcycle and a TV set are dangled for hole-in-one on holes 13 and 15 and another Skygo motorcycle will be given out for an eagle on any of the par 4’s.
A special winner in the Copa de Casino Español tournament will go to a CE member who will be named the Copa Player of the Year. To win this special title, one must participate in more than one sport to gain extra points. Last Copa Player of the Year was Louie Moro.
CLUB. The finals of the match play elimination rounds of the Club Championships at Cebu Country Club are being played today, except for Class A, which will continue till Saturday. Surprises? No biggie surprises.
These guys are all good. Only the strongest, the steadiest and the luckiest players get to the top and win the division playoffs. I played in the first round of the match play and lasted to the 18th hole, one down. Not too bad. I lost the match, but gained a friend. Hahaha.
However, in the Super Senior division, all Tony Jackson has to do is look in the mirror and ask; mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest and the mightiest SS player of them all. No Gestapo tactics; just plain and simple skills to outwit, outdo and scare the competition.
The CCC monthly medal was postponed to this Saturday and the winners will get the privilege to share the stage with the big winners of the Club and Class tournament.
This week, Cebu Country Club members and staff welcomed their new GM, Clifford Celdran, and already he’s got everyone in the field working. I am convinced that Clifford will do very well because he’s a man of action and is a good listener. Not only that, he will make the CCC seniors a strong formidable team in the PAL Interclub.
GOLF TIP: Many players concentrate solely on the putting strokes and don’t realize that the two key elements for consistency is grip pressure and alignment. Players push or pull putts because they change their grip pressure in different parts of their hands.
Too much finger pressure or squeezing your fingers tighter on the grip during a putting stroke causes the putter-head to close and make you pull the putt.
Too much pressure applied on the heel of the hands will promote an open putter-face and you will push the putt. Hand pressure should be kept constant throughout the stroke.
