CCPO pools police units to probe broker's shooting

HOPING to solve the shooting of a Customs broker soon, Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Director Patrocinio Comendador has tasked special units to help the Homicide Section speed up its investigation.

Comendador called for a case conference yesterday morning with the Homicide Section, Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau (CIIB) and other special units to help solve the shooting of Customs broker Leonardo Refuelo Abay-Abay.

Abay-Abay, 42, was shot outside his office building at the North Reclamation Area (NRA) in Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City last Wednesday morning.

Issues

The victim, who owns LRA Customs Brokerage, was shot in the back but was declared to be in stable condition hours after the incident.

Investigators are looking at personal issues and business rivalry as possible motives for the attack.

Comendador said the CIIB, under the command of Senior Insp. George Ylanan, was tasked to help the Homicide Section gather information that would lead to the identity of the gunman and his cohorts.

He said a witness is helping the Homicide Section come up with the cartographic sketch of the gunman.

Not hired gun

Comendador, however, believes the gunman is not a gun-for-hire because of the manner the shooting was pulled off.

Wearing a cap, a black jacket and black short pants, the gunman shot Abay-Abay in the back while the victim was checking a vacant space at the ground floor of Gothong Building, where he plans to transfer his office.

Police believe a revolver was used in the shooting because there were no empty shells at the crime scene that would indicate the caliber used.

The gunman fled on a motorcycle driven by a cohort. (JST)
