26 workers now better; incident an ‘isolated case’
KAJIMA Construction Corp. yesterday said all their 26 workers who suffered allergies after eating “tulingan” (yellow fin tuna) the other day are now out of danger.
Kajima operations manager Engineer Donald Catubic said the earlier report that 80 of their workers were rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center was incorrect.
Catubic said 80 workers ate the “tulingan” but only 26 of them were taken to the hospital because their faces turned red and they could hardly breathe.
He said that several others who also ate the fish were not affected.
Catubic said the concessionaire, Chanix Canteen Services, has been serving the workers for two years.
Nothing serious
“It was an isolated case and nothing was serious,” Catubic said, adding that it was not food poisoning as reported by a few radio stations.
Kajima, a Japanese construction firm, is undertaking the underground tunnel project from South Road Properties (SRP) to McArthur Blvd., Cebu City that passes under Plaza Independencia.
Better
Catubic said all of those who suffered from the allergy were released from hospital after treatment and nobody was confined.
He theorized that those who were brought to the hospital either have other illnesses that became complicated after eating the fish, or they have a weak immune system.
“I, too, ate the fish (tulingan) but I was not affected,” Catubic said.
Emmanuel “Manny” delos Santos Rabacal, chairman of the Infrastructure Development Committee of the Regional Development Council, said Kajima Construction is one of the biggest construction companies in the world.
Rabacal said that as a reputable firm, Kajima, with an international construction license, also constructed the Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge that connects the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu, and the Cebu South Coastal Road. (EOB)
