Barangay captain on patrol beaten up
A VILLAGE chief was beaten up by three men after he arrested one of their companions for bringing a knife.
Felix Ruben, barangay captain of Mabunao, Tabuelan town in northern Cebu, was lucky that his chief tanod was nearby to help him.
Ruben was conducting patrols around noon last Thursday, as they were preparing for a benefit dance to be held there that night.
It was when he saw Renato “Jun-jun” Punay, 28, carrying a nine-inch knife.
Attention
When he approached Punay to call his attention, an argument ensued.
As Ruben tried to arrest Punay, the latter’s friends—Jury Caballero, 20, and Rolando Purisima, 37—allegedly intervened and tried to stop him.
As Ruben persisted, they ganged up on him and began beating him up.
Romeo Dungog, his chief tanod, and others, immediately came to his aid and stopped the group from hurting the village chief. His injuries were reportedly minor.
All three were arrested and taken to the Tabuelan Police Station.
A case for direct assault upon a person in authority was filed against the three, while another case for concealing a deadly weapon was filed against Punay.
The cases were filed last Friday before the Tuburan Municipal Circuit Trial Court. (MEA)
