FOOTBALL fans got treated to some top flight action as Pinoysoccer.com escaped a 5-4 nail-biter against a tough FC Inter Cebu to win the Men’s Open crown of the 8th Cebu Interclub Football Cup at the San Roque grounds.
In the other finals, Springdale captured the U12 title, 1-0, against MLSDF Canduman; ANS Pomeroy defeated Springdale, 2-0, for the U15 crown, Queen City held on for a 1-0 win against Iligan; and San Roque Royale United defeated San Roque A for the 38-above crown.
With the last kicker of FCIC missing his target, the championship hopes of Pinoysoccer.com rode on the feet of Lemar Baunsit and the striker who scored 11 goals in his first game didn’t disappoint as he converted his spot kick for the 5-4 win.
Before the penalty shootout, both teams were equally matched and were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation.
Junard Aguilar drew first blood as he scored for FCIC in the 24th minute after a fumble by goalkeeper Alex Buanghoy.
Pinoysoccer.com got the chance for an equalizer as the referee awarded a penalty after a hand ball by Deneb Edoc.
Oliver Colina successfully converted the kick in the 65th for a 1-1 draw.
Scuffle
With no goals scored in the rest of regulation, the game went to extra time and the physical play turned up a notch.
Colina was given yellow card in the ninth minute after a scuffle with Frederick Buot, who in turn Buot hit Colina with an elbow.
Harold Buot also got sent out after an intentional head butt on Iry Genson
Meanwhile, in the age group divisions, Clarito Ijo came up with impressive plays in both ends of the court to lift Springdale to a 1-0 win over Canduman.
Ijo, who got the MVP award, drove from left past half the Canduman defense, lost and recovered the ball, got past a couple of defenders more for the only goal of the match.
In the second half, Canduman had Springdale on the defensive with the diminutive Vince Ruazo running circles around the Springdale defense. In the final minute, Canduman managed to get some clear shots but both were cleared by Ijo.
In the 15-Under final, Prince Anthony converted a penalty in the 52nd for a 1-0 count before Rene Sanchez’s shot slipped past Joshua Cruz three minutes later for the final count. (EKA with ML)
