Tuesday, May 06, 2008 Seares: John-john victim of politics? By Pachico A. Seares News Sense
ACCUSED politicians can’t resist using the defense of “political motive” of critic or enemy.
Charge a politician with anything — from overpricing street lamps to sleeping with a married secretary — and he’ll cry politics.
Of course, politics can’t be ruled out as reason for wheels of justice moving faster or slower, whatever suits the powerful person rigging it.
But politics making up the whole thing, an entire concoction?
John-john Osmeña’s camp blames politics for the information charging the former vice governor and ex-senator’s son with smuggling more than P3 billion worth of prohibited shabu ingredients.
Because of politics, John-john’s defense says, a conspiracy that involves Customs, police, NBI, PDEA and Department of Justice.
‘Just like a movie’
That’s a whole lot, created by different agencies of government, if we believe lawyer Edgar Gica who says in a court document that the case is “just like a movie, a make-believe scenario” and “actually a frame-up” with John-john as “victim.”
Movie production requires talents: scriptwriters, directors, big stars, extras, technical people. Did the bringing in of pseudoephedrine actually happen?
Were those barrels and their content, later hauled to Manila “for safekeeping,” just props? Did law enforcers invent all the spy operations that link John-john and his staffers to the crime?
Prudence dictates not to believe anything the Government says but it also tells us to suspend judgment until both sides are heard before the court.
John-john is innocent until the state can show the importation of pseudoephedrine was real and not movie stuff.
