Councilor helps unite Talisay women’s groups

FOR the sake of unity, officials are taking steps to merge the two ladies’ clubs in Barangay Lawaan 3, Talisay City.

Lawaan 3 Barangay Captain Delia Ybañez welcomed the proposal to have only one ladies’ group. She said a meeting has already been set at the barangay hall this Saturday at 7 p.m.

The barangay invited Councilor Shirley Belleza, council committee chairperson on women, family and minors, to attend the meeting as mediator.

Ybañez was thankful to Belleza for her peace initiative that prodded her and Econg to reconcile during the launching of the Bigasan sa Kababayen-an at the Talisay Gymnasium last Sunday.

Ybañez had a conflict with Econg, president of the United Women of Lawaan 3 (UWL), after the latter accused her of being unprofessional and unconcerned for women’s rights.

Econg, Ybañez’s political ally, ran for barangay kagawad under Ybañez’s slate in the Oct. 29 barangay polls last year, but lost.

Her defeat prompted Ybañez to organize the UWL with Econg as its first president.

The UWL’s creation rivaled the already established Panaghugpong sa Babayeng Nagpakabana alang sa Kauswagan of Cecil Laborada, sister of former Lawaan 3 barangay captain Joel Nacor.

Their rift, however, worsened after Ybañez endorsed Shennette Paradero to take over Econg’s presidency.

In turn, Econg joined forces with Laborada.

“We will see to it that their differences will not resurface. I have to remind them that the women leaders in Talisay are concerned more about humility, love and unity,” Belleza said. (GC)
