Wednesday, May 07, 2008 Gorres wants ticket to the top
A loss could cause him his dream of becoming a world champion.
That is how important Z “The Dream” Gorres’ next fight is, against Kenyan Nick “Kanyankole” Otieno on May 31 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino dubbed “One More Time”.
Michael Aldeguer, President of ALA Promotions, believes that Gorres is in for a very crucial fight that he can’t afford to lose or else he could forfeit his title shot at the International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight crown, which is currently owned by Dimitri Kirilov.
Important
“This is a very important fight for Gorres. If he will be defeated by Otieno, he might lose a chance for a title fight against either Darchinyan or Kirilov,” Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview yesterday. “He has to make this and win convincingly,” he added.
But Aldeguer isn’t worried about Gorres because he (Aldeguer) believes that he (Gorres) is always prepared for his fights.
“Gorres is always prepared. He knows what is at stake in this fight,” said Gorres’ handler, Aldeguer.
Gorres is fresh from a controversial draw against former IBF and IBO flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan last Feb. 2, and has fought in his last three battles the top pugilists in the super flyweight category namely: Darchinyan, Eric Ortiz, and Fernando Montiel.
Mandatory
Gorres was in for a mandatory defense of his IBF Inter-Continental belt against Tanzanian Francis Miye-yusho, but was changed to a non-title match against Otieno after Miyeyusho fell prey to Otieno last April 5.
This bout will be in preparation for a title fight, either at the end of the year or early next year, against the winner of the Darchinyan-Kirilov title bout.
Gorres boasts of a professional record of 27 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws, with 15 wins, by way of knockout, while his opponent, Otieno, has a record of 15 wins, with one loss, 5 knockouts and has only fought out of his native land of Kenya only once, which was in Russia where he suffered his first defeat.
