Chiongbian: Seniors golf in Bogo
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Teetime

THE elusive April monthly medal tournament of the Cebu Country Club is on again this Saturday. The heavy rains throughout the day had postponed the tournament that is now in scheduling conflict with the Federation of Seniors golf tournament at the Mercedes Plantation Golf Club in Bogo.

The senior’s golf tournament in Bogo is a popular outing for the seniors as they consider this a nice trip out of the city and a breath of country fresh air.

This time a special package is being offered by MPGC for an overnight stay in the club’s inn plus an extra round of golf next day for a very small fee. Golfers under 55 years of age can avail of the promo and compete in the guest division.

CCC members will notably be absent for the seniors golf tournament because Saturday evening is also the awards dinner for the CCC Club and Class winners, postponed from last week. But not to worry, golfers from the other golf clubs should make up the difference.

With the exception of Class A, the winners of the CCC Club and Class have already been determined but we will give you the results next week to keep the suspense going. The 36-hole match play between two former CCC Club Champions Eric Deen and Charles Hong will be this Saturday morning and a huge crowd of spectators expected to follow these guys around the golf course.

Next Thursday, May 15th, the Rotary District Assembly (Pets/Distas) golf tournament will tee off at Mactan Island Golf Club. Tee time starts at 7 a.m.
till 12 noon. The business portion of the Pets/Distas will be held at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in Mandaue, May 16-17. This year’s host is the Rotary Club of Banilad Metro with their lovely club president Ailyn Grace Soco, and chairmen Allan Limas and Ricky Ballesteros doing the heavy work.

The very successful Copa de Casino Español golf tournament went without a hitch at Alta Vista GC. The Alta golf course is in a great shape and in very good condition; reminiscent of when the golf course was still new. The No. 2 hole, which used to be the shortest and easiest hole of the golf course, is no longer a shoe-in shot, as it now has a back tee of about 170 yards.

Congratulations to the winners of the Copa golf tournament. The team of SPT Trucking, composed of the Mendoza family of Marvin, Nestor, Martin and Marco took the premier division-A, with a total of 126 points. The runner up position went to D’ Congtastor (124) with Vic Gocela, Enrico Solon, Edwin Espina and Marlo Cugtas. The Black Suede Scandalos team of Edwin Lim, Richard Lim. Alex Yeo and Hansel Ong also had 124 points but lost by count back.

The Division B title went to the Gothong team of Felix Villanueva, Nolan Rada, Steve Del Mar and Ben Gothong with 125 points. Runnerup honors went to the team of Rajah Park (124) of Nonoy Tirol, Jude Cimafranca, Rey Dira and Alex Chiongbian.

The team of Enginero won Division C and outclassed everyone in the tournament with 132 points. Super-golfer Benedict Uy, who scored 47 points—the highest in the tournament–anchored the Enginero team with teammates Jonathan Yu, Willy Go and Richard Li. The runnerup diadem went to the Thunderbirds (127) Albert Solis, Loren Ong, Gene Matiga and Edwin Medalle.

Albert Solis also won the special award as the Casino Espanol Golfer of the Year.

GOLF TIP. One very important key to a good golf swing is to keep your body level throughout the whole swing. Your head, shoulders and hips must stay leveled during the backswing, downswing and follow-through to get the results you want.

Lifting, tilting and/or swaying during the backswing will move the club off its proper plane and make it very difficult to get back to the right plane on the downswing. When the beginning is bad, the rest of the swing will predictably be bad and your shots will suffer. The easiest way to stay level is to keep your right side as quiet as possible, while keeping your left side more dominant during the backswing.
