SWU, UV renew rivalry

AFTER a stint at Boracay, Cebu’s top beach volleyball teams will be in action once again in a two-day volleyball competition in the 1st San Remigio Beach Volleyball Open on May 10 and 11.

The tandem of Florianne Guttierez and Janelle Tabio of Southwestern University, this year’s Nestea Beach Volleyball national champions, will be up against archrival and powerhouse University of the Visayas duo Jusabelle Brillo and Janez Igot and University of Philippines Foundation’s Erika Verano and Herlene Ybarita—the elite beach volleyball teams of Cebu.

Other teams set to compete against Cebu’s best are University of San Carlos’ Jeremy Montalvo and Juvy Glipo, the Valleygals’ Marites Natad and Christine Bohol, the Volleybelles’ Kennet Garces and Marissa Lagancia, the Atenians’ Michelle Gimarino and Desiree Valiar and the Xoxo team of April Tamayo and Aireen Montesino.

The eight teams will be divided into two brackets and compete in a single round robin. The top two teams of each bracket will battle for the two finals spots.

The champions will be get a cash prize of P5,000 and a trophy, while the second and third placers will pocket P3,000 and P2,000, respectively.

The competition will be start off with an opening ceremony at 7:30 followed right after with the games.

This tournament is organized by the local government of San Remegio and Cebu Volleyball Association. (EKA)
