THE Naga City Government could save as much as P35 million in the construction of their reclamation project after a power plant agreed to donate filling materials.
Filling materials for the seven-hectare reclamation project will be sourced from the 200-megawatt coal-fired power plant construction site in Naga, a project being undertaken by the SPC Power Corp. and Korean Electric Power Corp. (Kepco).
Once the ground soil is excavated from the power plant’s project site in preparation for the concrete foundation of the structure, the soil will be dumped at the reclamation project site free of charge.
Naga City Mayor Valdemar Chiong said the reclamation project will be the future site of the new City Hall building and a new public market.
The area to be reclaimed is located at the back of the existing City Hall and adjacent to the three-hectare reclamation area, which is now being used as a park and playground.
The mayor said that instead of buying filling materials from the mountain barangays, like what Cebu City officials did when they undertook the South Reclamation Project, Naga will rely on the donation of SPC-Kepco joint venture.
Chiong said this will benefit both the SPC-Kepco and City Government because the plant developer will no longer need a dump site for the soil, while the City will be able to cut down construction cost and save a lot of money.
And since the City still has not allocated funds for filling materials, Chiong said the donation could hasten the implementation of the reclamation project.
Aside from the filling materials, Naga City will also be getting computers from Dosant Industries, the main contractor of SPC-Kepco.
Computers
Chiong said that Dosant Industries will be replacing their computers in their South Korea office and will donate the old units to the City Government.
The donation of 100 units of Pentium 4 computers would also mean big savings for the City Government since it will not have to buy computers for the new offices that they will open. The City Prosecutor’s Office and the Department of Education division office will also get their own share of computers.
Aside from the reclamation project, Chiong said the Cebu Provincial Government also plans to build a container port that would serve as an alternate port to the Cebu International Port.
He said that a team of engineers have already conducted a study and concluded that Ocean-going vessels can also dock in the area.
“I am confident that some importers and exporters will relocate to Naga City if the container port project will be realized because under the City Charter, there is no increase of real property taxes for 10 years,” Chiong said. (EOB)
