FROM its humble beginnings, a family business that started in Liloan, Cebu has expanded its distribution network of beauty products to other parts of the Visayas and Mindanao.
From a capital of P10,000 when it was founded in 1992, beauty soap manufacturer GT Cosmetics’ monthly gross revenues go up to as much as P2 million.
This, without expensive advertising, said GT Cosmetics sales manager Leonora Salvane.
“In less than a year, we noticed that it (the business) has grown bigger,” she said.
Salvane, a chemical engineer, formulated GT Cosmetics’ three soap varieties: bleaching, carrot and papaya. The carrot soap, both for skin whitening and anti-aging, is the company’s most popular.

While big cosmetic companies spent millions on advertising, GT Cosmetics grew the business with the help of promotions personnel. The company presented its products to the media for the first time Thursday.
“Due to budgetary constraints, we (just) relied on our promo girls. Now, we hope to grow more through the introduction of our products to the media,” Salvane said.
GT Cosmetics also makes sun block, cleanser and astringent for men and women.
“The difference (between) our products (and those of other companies) is that ours are all pure herbal. Our base ingredient is highly refined coconut oil, which is even purified and more expensive than what we normally use,” said Salvane.
“Every possible aspect was considered, from ingredients to mode of application, even factors like time and type of container used,” she said.
Salvane said users of GT Cosmetics products should follow the instructions stated on the package of each product to achieve the right results.
GT Cosmetics products are available in leading supermarkets and department stores in the Visayas and Mindanao. The company is also negotiating with retail owners in Luzon.
Salvane said GT stands for both “God’s Talent” and “Good Things.” (Maria Nerissa D. Quiño, UP Mass Comm Intern)
