Top beach volley teams to strut wares in San Remegio today

WILL the Southwestern University (SWU) dynamic duo of Florianne Guttierez and Janelle Tabio repeat their feat at the Nestea Beach Volleyball Competition in Boracay or will the University of the Visayas (UV) tandem of Jusabelle Brillo and Janez Igot regain their former glory?

These will all be answered today as both teams will once more face off along with six other teams in the two-day 1st San Remegio Beach Volleyball Open, this morning at the Northern town of San Remegio.

SWU dethroned the defending Nestea Beach Volleyball champions UV in the finals of the Nestea Beach Volleyball National last month in three sets 22-25, 25-23, 15-11—a sweet revenge for SWU after UV defeated them in the 2007 national finals.

As of the moment, SWU holds the undisputed record in the 12-year old Nestea competition as the only team to have won four national titles. And in all four of them, Gutierrez had a part of it to be the only player to have won four championship crowns.

Other teams joining the two powerhouse teams are the Volleygals of two-time national champion Mari–tess Natad, who pairs up with Christine Bohol, University of San Carlos’ Jeremy Montalvo and Juvy Glipo, the Volleybelles’ Kenneth Garces and Marissa Lagancia, the Atenians’of Michelle Gi–marino and Desiree Valiar and the Xoxo twosome of April Tamayo and Aireen Montesino.

The competition will kickoff after the opening ceremony at 7:30 in the morning.

The eliminations will be played today, while the semifinals and finals will be played tomorrow.

The champion of this tournament will pocket a P5,000 cash prize, while the second placer will get P3,000. The third placer will receive P2,000. No one goes home empty-handed as the rest of the losing teams will receive consolation prizes.

This beach volleyball extravaganza is made possible by the local government of San Remegio and the Cebu Volleyball Association. (EKA)
