THREE weeks from now, at least 40 unwed couples in Talisay City will exchange “I do’s” in a mass wedding.
Councilor Shirley Belleza considers the June 5 mass wedding as the biggest in terms of number of couples who will be united in special rites at the Sto. Niño Parish Church in Barangay Mohon.
The Belleza-chaired committee on women, family and minors at the City Council, holds this annual mass wedding for indigent unwed spouses in Talisay for fifth consecutive year.
The Sta. Teresa de Avila Parish in Barangay Poblacion and St. Joseph Parish in Barangay Tabunok are also helping Belleza’s committee in holding the marriage rites.
Belleza assured it is going to be a special day for these couples as they will be treated to a sumptuous reception after the ceremony.
A private firm and a nongovernment organization have also pledged to provide wedding cakes and bottles of red wine for each couple.
Belleza stressed on the need to unite these unmarried spouses to eliminate live-in relationships.
Aside from solemnizing their marriage in a holy mass, the wedding also ensures that their children will get proper education, she said.
“It has an adverse or even traumatic effect on the children if their parents remain unwed. The schools now oblige them to submit marriage certificates as part of the requirements,” she added.
In another report, a barangay in Talisay City will soon have its own night high school.
The City Council, in its regular session Tuesday, passed a resolution supporting the request of the Lawaan III barangay high school for the opening of a secondary night school.
Councilor Dennis Basillote, City Council committee chairman on education, sponsored the measure in support to the Lawaan III council resolution 2008-21, which was approved last April 13.
Upon the request of parents and students, the Barangay Council urgently asked the City Council to expedite the opening of the Lawaan III Night High School.
“The opening of Night High School will be able to help the students to continue their secondary studies,” read Basillote’s resolution.
Once the night high school is opened this year, it will serve as an extension after the elementary school, it added. (GC)
