JACOB Lagman made an emphatic entry into the Boys 14 division as he trounced the division’s big names to claim the crown of the Head Penn Junior Tennis Tournament the other day at the Rizal Memorial Complex Tennis courts in Manila.
Lagman defeated top-seed Arjohn dela Cruz to take the championship crown in the Group 1 event. The other day, Lagman defeated Dheo Talatayod for his quarterfinal assignment and John Maverick Ribay in the semifinals, all members of the National Boys 14 team.
Meanwhile, Siso siblings Bernardine and Sally Mae had contrasting ends in their respective Head Penn bids.
Bernardine pulled off a twinkill, but the highly-touted Sally Mae suffered a doubled whammy in the competition, losing both championship battles.
Sally Mae was once more faced with her biggest weaknesses when playing—bad calls and a rude crowd—that the 13-year-old from University of San Carlos South Campus couldn’t help but cry.
Sally Mae first lost to her practice partner Martina Junika Guba in the Girls 16 final, 3-6, 6-3, 0-6, and already had a slumped confidence going into the finals of the Girls 14.
However, the camp of her opponent, Shanine Olivarez, called all the ball boys and all of them started jeering at Sally Mae. This clearly affected Sally Mae that at one point, she could not help herself and shouted back.
“We almost got into a fight. My nephew tried to ask them and Olivarez’s mother nicely not to do that because this is just a game, but they won’t,” said Siso’s mother Sally. (MCB)
