Tuesday, May 13, 2008 Village women forge work group, truce
THE two women’s clubs in Barangay Lawaan 3, Talisay City have agreed to work as one for the village’s progress.
Officials of the United Women of Lawaan 3 (UWL) of Jocelyn Econg and Panaghugpong sa mga Babayeng Nagpakabana Alang sa Kalambuan (Psbank) of Priscilla Labo-rada agreed to function separately, but will sit down together on matters involving barangay projects, activities and other concerns.
Honorary
Lawaan 3 Barangay Captain Delia Ybañez will also sit as honorary chairperson with three representatives from the two ladies’ clubs respectively during official meetings.
The two organizations came up with this arrangement following a three-hour assembly last Saturday at the Barangay Hall with City Councilor Shirley Belleza as the mediator.
Belleza is the council committee chairperson on women, family and minors.
Merger
Ybañez, who earlier preferred to have one women’s group in Lawaan 3, acceded to suggestions not to merge the two clubs in the meantime.
She also found it fair because the Psbank now has standing financial obligations with the Talisay Women’s Federation, the umbrella of all the ladies’ associations in Talisay.
“So it’s unfair to let UWL members pay the financial obligations of Psbank with the federation. It’s better to keep it that way,” Ybañes said.
In the same meeting, Econg decided to quit her UWL presidency to give way to new elected president Shennette Paradero.
Turnover
Econg is expected to formally submit her resignation before the federation this week.
The resignation came days after Belleza reconciled both Econg and Ybañez during a federation’s assembly last week.
The two were at odds because of their personal conflict that reportedly stemmed from Econg’s accusations that the village chief did not care about women’s rights in Lawaan 3.
The rift worsened after Ybañez endorsed Paradero to take over Econg’s post.
This prompted Belleza to step in, which made the two women decide to set aside their differences. (GC)
