Ever Garcia passes away at 92

SEVERIANA “Ever” Biaño Garcia passed away yesterday at the age of 92.

She was a mentor, educator and wife to Jesus Paras Garcia Sr., the late chairman of Sun.Star Publishing Inc.

She was also the mother of former Department of Transportation and Communication secretary and Sun.Star Publishing Inc. president Jesus “Sonny” Jr. and former Cebu City mayor Alvin Garcia.

Ever was diagnosed in April last year with adenocarcinoma or cancer of the lungs, typical of women non-smokers. However, she passed away without suffering any pain.

“We are just so happy that she did not suffer at all. She just faded away,” said Sun.Star Cebu Lifestyle editor Nelia Neri, one of Ever’s daughters.

Valuable parents

Ever and her husband raised a family that was recognized as Cebu’s Model Family of 1969 by the Department of Social Welfare and Development and Family Life Workshop of the Philippines and Family of the Year in 1992 by the Cabahug Clan Foundation.

The couple was also a recipient of the Valuable Parents Perlas Awards in 1993.

Aside from being a model wife and mother, Ever served various socio-civic organizations in her lifetime.

On her 90th birthday, Ever received plaques of recognition from the Girl Scouts of the Philippines, which she served as Cebu Council president and Visayas Regional chairperson.

She also received a recognition from the Sandigan Foundation, where she served as president until her retirement.

She also helped the Society of the Crippled Children. Ever was one of the most active members of the Catholic Women’s League and the Capitol Parish Council and a president of the Inner Wheel Club District 386.

She taught and had served as the first registrar of the Cebu Normal School (now University).

Ever, daughter of Marcos Biaño and Marcela Ouano of Mandaue City, passed away four years and four days after her husband Jesus died.

“They were very close,” Neri added.

The family plans to hold the interment on Jesus’ death anniversary on May 18.
