Thursday, May 15, 2008 Mandaue college earning millions, says Mayor Cortes
THE Mandaue City College (MCC) is earning millions and this is why it is so hard for its officers to submit an accounting of the school’s income, said Mayor Jonas Cortes.
The mayor received reports that apart from academic fees, everything, including pictures for school IDs, is paid in a centralized process.
For one to justify one’s hold on the school and its students, one must have control over its academic and financial records, said an MCC official, who asked not to be named.
The school has two branches. One branch has around 75 students under Dr. Susana Cabahug and the other, which has around 1,000 enrollees, is under Dr. Paulus Mariae Cañete.
2 campuses
The campus under Cabahug holds classes at the sports complex with the help of Mayor Cortes. The school managed by Cañete holds classes at the Eversly Child Sanitarium in Barangay Jagobiao through the assistance of Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz (Cebu, 6th district).
Based on the schedule of approved fees, the MCC at the sports complex will collect P1,100 miscellaneous fees from students upon enrolment.
The amount covers the entrance test fees, cultural/sports/physical fees, medical and dental fees, ID, community service projects and various fees for laboratory, library, publication, computer and insurance.
On top of the fees are the P100 per unit tuition and the P200 admission fee.
On the other hand, based on its schedule of fees and an enrolment figure of 1,000, the Eversly campus can collect P1.1 million for miscellaneous fees alone, said a school official who asked not to be named.
The source said that if all 1,000 students at the Eversly campus will carry each an average load of 15 units this year, the school can collect another P1.5 million in tuition fees.
“This is how important a school record is to student as one cannot enroll without these documents, which will serve as a guide,” the source said.
Sun.Star Cebu yesterday tried but failed to contact Cañete through his mobile phone.
Academic records found at the registrar’s office include student records, grade sheets and records of officials, teachers and administrative personnel.
Financial records found at the accounting office include receipts of payments, past dues and payrolls.
Documents retrieved from the campus under Cañete include academic and financial records, which the City Government took custody of.
An inventory is being conducted after Mayor Cortes padlocked the MCC-Ibabao Campus last April 18.
Students who wish to enroll at MCC will have to ask for a copy of these records.
The mayor has promised to issue them a certified true copy after the inventory.
These records were reportedly the ones that Gavino Cabahug was hired to steal.
Cabahug alleged that he was tasked by Cañete to steal the records. But Cañete denied the allegation. (OCP)
