Chiongbian: Cebu Country Club’s trifecta
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Teetime

LAST Saturday, all and everything showed up for the trifecta golf tournament at Cebu Country Club (CCC). There was the monthly medal, the club championship and the jungolf championship, all on the same day. Families of the players were there and even heavy clouds showed up to douse water and cool down the combatants in the back nine. Most managed to finish their games, except for the jungolf, which continued till Sunday.

The 36-hole match play between two former club champions was very close and went to the final hole to determine the winner. Charles Hong finally won as CCC Club Champion over Eric Deen, 1 up. The jungolf results were a tandem win by the Olea family with Franz as CCC boys jungolf champion and Abbey as CCC girls jungolf champion over Hannah Wong.

The Class champion of division B was Evans Tumaliwan over Wendell Yap. Division C champion was Wayne Congmon over Jerry Uy and the division D champion Miguel Mancao over Pio Go. A surprising revelation was that the qualifiers in the senior division were all Japanese members of CCC and the last Japanese standing was champion Koichi Horii over Manabo Ichikawa. Super senior champion (of course) went to Tony Jackson over Tony Sikimhua.

Carl Almario topped the CCC April monthly medal with a lowest gross of 76.

Class A champion was Evans Tumaliwan (net 76) over runnerup Marco Mendoza (net 71). Class B champion was Alex Garcia (net 65) over runnerup Chris Kokseng (net 70). Class C champion was Billy Tan (net 65) over Justin Uy (net 68). Class D champion was Rolly Tan (net 69) over Gerry Gollon (net 71) and seniors champion was Manning Granada (net 71) over runnerup Tony Jackson (net 71).

The Rotary District Assembly opens today and believe it or not, the first day is all sports. Three sports events are scheduled for today starting with the golf tournament at Mactan Island Golf Club, 7am-10am, chaired by PP Rico Tautho of RC Banilad Metro.

SEMINAR. A Gun Safety seminar and a fellowship Rotary Shootfest chaired by PP Billy Jaca (RC Cebu Uptown) will be held at the Camp Lapu-Lapu Firing Range in Lahug, 9 am - 3pm. In the evening comes bowling at the Gaisano bowlingplex in Banilad chaired by PP Udo Pelkowski (RC Central Mactan). Any Rotarian interested in joining these events can just show up at the location.

The plenary segment of the President-elect seminar and District Assembly (Pets/Distas) starts tomorrow at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in Mandaue at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. Saturday. This writer will be one of the speakers for the Pets. This is when all incoming presidents of Visayas Rotary Clubs attend an orientation seminar for the big job ahead of leading their club starting this June. Other Rotary club officers and committee chairs will participate in the plenary and workshops of the District Assembly.

The finale will be the turnover ceremony of outgoing district governor Yumi Espina to DG Billy Parilla of RC Matina Davao. Awards chair DS Danilo Vicencio (RC Cebu Mabolo) completes his heavy task and assist DG Yumi give out special awards to deserving leaders and clubs for RY 2007-08. The fellowship night on Friday will be an “Oh, Ah, hurray” for the Rotarians as the evening’s program is a search for “the Rotarian Idol.”

GOLF TIP. If you’re having problems with fairway woods, it’s likely that you are hanging back on your right side. You need to shift your body forward just like throwing something heavy. Make a full body release moving toward the target to get good contact with the ball.

For stability, you should have a wide stance and have the ball located at the bottom of the arc, which is just inside your left heel. When you practice before a shot, take note where the clubhead hits the ground; that is where you want the ball to be.

Since you’re hitting the ball off the turf, the clubhead must also strike the turf. Picking it clean will not give good results and won’t help the ball fly.

Focus on swinging on a slightly descending angle and don’t be afraid to take a small divot, the clubface’s loft and the sole’s weight will send the ball flying.
