Friday, May 16, 2008 Symantec offers Cebu companies IT solutions against cyber-crimes
RECOGNIZING the value of critical information stored within a company’s network, Symantec Corp. launched two new products that aim to curb cyber-crimes and provide a solution to data recovery.
The products, Backup Exec 12 and Backup Exec Systems Recovery 8 (BESR 8), support the Windows environment—including the yet-to-be-released Microsoft Windows Server 2008.
Cebu-based medium-sized companies and large corporations were also among the first to know about the products as the company picked Cebu as the second launch pad of the products, after Manila.
About 80 companies were invited to the launch and end user’s briefing held at the Cebu City Marriott Hotel yesterday.
Vic Ciencia, manager for systems engineering, said there is a need for companies to be proactive in securing their data since statistics on Internet security threat showed that information threat has doubled in the last six months of 2007.
Ciencia mentioned that in a report on Internet security threat, the first half of 2007 recorded more than 200,000 new code threats globally. The number increased to 499,000 by the second half of last year.
“Underground trading is (also) getting more mature,” he said, adding that methods to leak data—like credit card information or company trade secrets—are becoming more sophisticated.
Backup Exec 12, said Ciencia, is integrated with other Symantec anti-virus products to ensure that data stored in Microsoft servers are protected.
One of its advantages, Ciencia pointed out, is its capability to restore granular data in a matter of seconds.
Backup Exec 12 is also connected to the ThreatCon global security alert system, which averts a computer virus outbreak to infect a company’s servers.
Since ThreatCon is backed by a global intelligence network, end users are warned about an impending high risk level of virus outbreak. The system also enables the user to create a “clean” backup of the company’s files.
In cases when human error, natural disasters or infrastructure failures cause a server to crash, Ciencia recommends the use of the BESR 8 software as it is able to perform a “rapid, reliable and complete system recovery of data.”
BESR 8 will also allow one to recover data from a specific brand to a dissimilar and virtual environment. This particular product is also aimed to enhance an organization’s disaster recovery efforts, an official statement from Symantec Corp. said.
The official statement also said that although BESR 8 is a standalone solution, it is complementary to Backup Exec 12 for
Windows Servers.
But Ciencia said the two software still support open source platforms like Linux and Unix.
Price for the Backup Exec 12 is estimated to start at $1,115.40 per server and $1,227.50 per server for BESR 8.
There is also no limit to the number of desktops that can be connected to a server installed with the new software, Ciencia said. (DME)
