National winner

WITH barely a year of experience, the Veco Toastmasters (TM) Club has established a name as home of a national speech champion.

Visayan Electric Co. (Veco) TM Noel Modesto, representing Division C, emerged as the District 75 (Philippines) champion in the Tall Tales Contest.

District 75, composed of all the Toastmasters Clubs in the Philippines, held its 2008 District Convention (Discon) at the Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay City recently.

Four speech contests highlighted the Discon—Tall Tales, Impromptu, Prepared and Evaluation contests.

Modesto’s feat as 2008 District 75 Tall Tales champion has shown that Cebu is the home of humorous speakers. Division I, the other division from Cebu, was the runner-up.

It was nearly a sweep of gold medals for Division C, as it also won the Tall Tales, Impromptu and Evaluation contests.

Modesto also gained the popularity as the Philippine Toastmasters’ “The GI” or Genuine Ilonggo, which happens to be the title of his speech.

Modesto bested 10 contestants representing the 10 divisions which vied for the championship.

Privilege

Veco “kaibigans,” led by senior vice president (SVP) and chief operating officer Jim Aboitiz, SVP for engineering Raul Lucero, vice president for administration Chona Tiu and assistant vice president for human resource Sye Añiga had the privilege of witnessing the National Tall Tales Champion deliver his winning piece.

Complete with costume, Modesto did not fail to entertain and elicit laughter from the audience.
