22 brys. support Jonas

IN the middle of the controversy on the alleged plot to kill Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes, the arrest of the alleged plotter, and the “frame-up” cry of some members of the opposition, 22 barangay captains signed a manifesto supporting the mayor and condemning some members of the opposition.

The leader of the opposition bloc, however, was not surprised knowing that the mayor’s allies made the manifesto.

Confidence

Of the city’s 27 barangay captains, 22 leaders expressed confidence on Mayor Cortes, commending the Mandaue City police and condemning Vice Mayor Carlo Pontico Fortuna, Councilor Victor Biaño and Paulus Mariae Cañete. They also condemned an unnamed public official.

Done on May 13, the manifesto expressed unwavering support and confidence on the mayor as they urged him to remain courageous and steadfast against Fortuna, Biaño and an unnamed public official, whom they labeled as obstructionists.

The community leaders also hailed and commended the city police for not only aborting the plan to steal Mandaue City College records and the supposed plot to kill the mayor, but also for arresting the alleged plotter Dr. Paulus Mariae Cañete.

Statement

Their manifesto further stated that instead of appreciating the PNP’s accomplishments, Fortuna and Biaño were “not contented with muddling and distorting the issue even publicly announced that they will exert efforts for the transfer of the police officers…”

The barangay captains condemned “in the strongest terms” the intervention of Fortuna, Biaño and the unnamed official in “prematurely” declaring the arrest of Dr. Paulus Mariae Cañete as a frame-up.

“I will respect but I will not dignify that statement,” said Fortuna who considers the manifesto a political statement.

He believed that the move was cooked up by the mayor, “to rally his people behind him on this issue.”

The barangay leaders furnished the city council and Sixth District Rep. Nerissa Soon Ruiz the manifesto. (OCP)
