Friday, May 16, 2008 USC Warriors beat Jaguars, 93-73
THE small but extremely hardworking Giovanni Padillo towed the undermanned University of San Carlos Warriors to an 83-73 win over the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars at the start of the 1st M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Summer Basketball Challenge at the Cebu Coliseum last Wednesday.
The Don Bosco College (DBC) Greywolves, on the other hand, survived the tough challenge of the Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology (SCSIT) Skyblazers before pulling a 100-92 victory.
Without their usual scoring leaders, Padillo stepped up to the challenge and scored 19 baskets.
Despite the huge production from USJ-R’s bigman John Malinao and ace point guard Arman Ponce, the Warriors displayed a balance scoring to win the ball game.
In the opening match, the Don Bosco Greywolves blitzed hard in the second quarter to erect a 52-39 lead at the bend.
But the Skyblazers bounced hard in the third period, outscoring the taller and more organized Greywolves, 31-22, to move within 70-74 entering the final period.
However, the Skyblazers lost steam in the payoff period and the Greywolves did just enough to win the game.
Rimar Perturbos scored 16 to lead DBC scorers, while Jeffrey Tampus scored the game-high 28 points for the losing Skyblazers.
