Gloria to visit churches in Cebu

PRESIDENT Arroyo will lead the ground-breaking ceremony for the ninth Philippine Science High School (PSHS) campus in the country in Barangay Talaytay, Argao today.

The groundbreaking is for the two-story, 12-classroom academic building, the first of four projects within the 5.2-hectare campus. The building will cost P20 million.

Other projects include the P7-million sports complex, P15-million perimeter fence and the school canteen, which will cost P500,000.

Arroyo will also observe the enrollment activities in the school today.

Fifty-eight students signified their interest to attend PSHS-Central Visa-yas, but only 38 have confirmed to enroll for first year high schools for school year 2008-2009.

PSHS-Central Visayas also has 33 second year high school students and 25 third year students.

The Central Visayas Campus was formally opened in June 2006.

It is the project of former second district congressman Simeon Kintanar, who initiated a feasibility study on the opening of a PSHS campus in Argao in 1999 yet.

It took Kintanar six years to negotiate with Argao landowners to use their lots for the school. One of the criteria for the setting up of a PSHS campus is that the lot area for the school should be at least five hectares, “to suit the scholars’ needs.”

Aside from classrooms, the campus should also have laboratories, offices, canteen, library, gymnasium, auditorium and dormitories.

PSHS will be under the supervision of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

DOST Secretary Estrel-la Alabastro will also attend the activity today to present the overview of the project.

Arroyo is also scheduled to visit different churches.

She will stay overnight in Cebu to attend private meetings.

She will proceed to Bohol tomorrow for the capsule-laying ceremony for the Panglao International Airport project.

The President will also hold a Cabinet meeting in Bohol tomorrow, and will have dinner with local government officials. (JGA)
