Team GGC beats Paul Yu for Frasco Cup finals

TEAM GGC started off slow but recovered just in time to claim a spot to the final round of the first Mayor Duke Frasco Volleyball Open yesterday at the Panphil Frasco Sports Complex in Liloan, Cebu.

GGC, powered by the current big names in Cebu volleyball, had to brush off a sloppy start to win over Paul Yu, 21-25, 25-11, 26-24, 25-21.

“We did not gel well at first but we managed to get out acts together,” said GGC’s Janeth Ponte, who played alongside Nestea Beach Volley national title-holders Florian Gutierrez, Jusabelle Brillo and Janez Igot.

GGC arranged a finals showdown with Consolacion, which defeated University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 25-20, 25-22, 15-25, 25-21.

Star studded

Consolacion prides itself of fielding an equally star-studded cast of Maritess Natad, Christine Bohold and Michelle Gimarino. The troop proved to be too much for USPF, which is anchored on Erika Verano.

In the men’s division, University of San Carlos, the defending champion of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi), also needed four sets before defeating Paul Yu, 25-14, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19.

Leading USC’s scoring rampage was two-time Cesafi MVP Roderick Arenasa.

USC will be taking on Designer Specs in the final round.

Designer Specs’ entry to the championship round was the most-hassle free of all as it swept Talisay City in straight sets, 25-14, 25-21, 25-22.

Leading the Designer Spec’s assault was Jonrey Sasing, who recently towed USPF men’s team to a second place finish in the national finals of the Nestea Beach Volley Competition last month in Boracay.

The competition stakes P20,000 cash prize for the winning team. (MCB)
