Monday, May 19, 2008 Viloria drops Mexican in third round
FORMER World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Brian “Hawaiian Punch” Viloria is back to his winning ways after scoring his third straight win in Mexico.
After a layoff for almost a year from the ring, Viloria scored a third-round knockout victory against Fred Herberto Valdez yesterday at Plaza Monumental in
Aguascalientes, Mexico.
Viloria was impressive and aggressive and stopped the Mexican in the 2:10 mark of the third round with a solid body shot according to a report posted at philboxing.com.
Viloria was once in the limelight after dethroning then WBC lightweight king Edgar Sosa in a first round KO win in 2005.
But after losing to Edgar Sosa last year for the vacant WBC light flyweight title, Viloria stopped boxing for a while to rethink his career but returned to the ring this year, winning via unanimous decision in his comeback fight with Jose Garcia Bernal.
Now he is slowly climbing back in the race and plans to be able to fight a title bout this year.
After the win, Viloria now boasts a record of 22 wins 2 losses and 1 draw with 13 KOs, while Valdez dropped to 10-18 with 5 KOs.
Meanwhile, in that same card Michael Farenas dominated over his Mexican opponent Fermin De Los Santos in a unanimous decision.
He sent De Los Santos to the canvas in the second round with a strong right to the body. Evident of Farenas’ punching power, the Mexican lost his mouthpiece several times in the fight.
Farenas improved his record to 21 wins 2 losses and 2 draws with 18 KOs while his foe De Los Santos dropped to 10-12-1 win-loss-draw record with 7 KOs. (EKA)
