Sisos pull out of Manila event to take rest

THE competitors of the Toby’s tennis competition in Manila heaved a sigh of relief when siblings Sally Mae and Bernardine Niño Siso pulled out of the competition to take a much-needed respite from competing after three straight months.

The two had already moved to the second round of their respective divisions when Niño retired for an injured toe.

Their coach, Bobby Soquiño, then decided to let Sally Mae, who is also suffering from sore right wrist, go home with her brother to take a rest from the brutal competition in Manila.

The Sisos had been winning titles in various competitions, and their lowest accomplishment were runnerup finishes.

Sally Mae has been on the road the longest as she competed in three international competitions starting March 15, coming home only for two days before plunging right back into action.

“They have been beating themselves up for Philta points and it’s best they rest for a while,” said their mother Sally.

The brother-sister tandem arrived yesterday and instead of taking a full rest, they decided to compete in the local competition, the Prince tournament, which is ongoing at the Cebu Country Club tennis courts. They will be back in Manila on June 1 for another competition.

Sally said that the kids wanted to compete here in Cebu since the competition is not as intense as that in Manila. The Sisos will be seeing action starting today with Sally Mae competing in an older age group, the Girls 18 Under division, while Bernardine will compete in the Boys 16.

Yesterday, the 10-Under unisex division was the first to be played before rains hampered the scheduled matches.

Winning slots to the quarterfinals were Charles Kinaadman, who defeated Mae Alferes, 8-1; Sheena Camporedondo, who won over Miguel Sesaldo, 8-5; Godfrey Seno, who trounced Derek Tabotabo, 8-4; Clyde Dijali, who ousted Andrew Cenabre, 8-1; and Anthony Pantino who defeated Shyne Villareal, 8-1.
