Ho-hum, as usual leaders dominate

THERE were no surprises in the second day of the 13th Gullas Cup tennis competition as the seeded players live up to expectations as they sailed through their respective assignments yesterday at the Cebu Country Club and Casino Español Tennis Courts.

Cebu’s winningest junior netter, Sally Mae Siso, rode on the coattails of the momentum of her win last week and slapped an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Gloryfaith Bohol to claim a slot to the quarterfinal round of the Girls 14 division.

Top player

Siso is the top player in the age group in this competition and is ranked third in the national roster.

Siso’s next assignment will be Clarissa Mae Fuentes, who moved to the next round after a 6-1, 6-1 flogging of Ameel Sumapig. The other quarterfinalists for this age group were Juvilyn Barquin, Janice Cañete and Anna Vienes, who defeated their respective foes yesterday. Cheska Tabotabo, the second-seeded player in the competition, will plunge into action today after enjoying a bye yesterday.

In the Girls 18 division, top player Lovelie Soquiño earned a slot to the semifinals following a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jessica Lagman.

Filipino-German Jacqueline Chalas, meanwhile, continues to make her presence felt as she trounced Cindy Gerapusco, 6-4,6-3. The visiting netter continues to hunt for a title after losing last week to Siso in the Girls 18 finals.

In the lower part of the draw, moving to the semifinals of the Girls 18 is Vincee Sanchez, who survived a three-setter battle with Arlene Marave, 1-6, 6-4, 10-4. Sanchez will try to extend her energy tomorrow when she faces Siso in the semis.

Rounds

Meanwhile, it had taken a while before the first round of the Boys 16 could finish as it was the bracket that had attracted the most number of players. Thirty-six players will be battling for the crown in this age group.

As of yesterday, only five matches were finished. Winning their respective assignments were top-seeded player Princeton Gerapusco, Frankiln Encarnacion, Ian Querubin and Jacob Lagman.

Meanwhile, advancing to the next round in the Boys 12 class were Rafael Arpon, who defeated John Villamor, 6-4, 6-1; Spencer Sagrado, who booted out Clyde Bienes, 6-4, 6-3 and Ralph Juliane, who pulled off a 7-5, 6-1 winner over Reunne Hibidnado. (MCB)
