School season prompts anti-crime preparations

WITH the school opening only two weeks away, police have prepared measures to secure pupils and students from falling prey to lawless elements.

Apart from anticipating a possible rise in snatching and pickpocket incidents, the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) also expects fraternity or gang-related incidents.

Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 Director Ronald Roderos, during yesterday’s monthly Talakayan sa Isyung Pulis, directed all the city and provincial police chiefs to intensify police visibility not only near the schools but also in terminals where students are expected to arrive from their hometowns.

Roderos, who is planning to inspect different schools and terminals during the first day of classes on June 10, said his office is coming up with pamphlets that carry tips on how to avoid getting victimized by petty thieves. The pamphlets will be distributed soon, he said.

In the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu and in Cebu Province, random checkpoints will be sustained.

Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division (RIDMD) Chief Arturo Evangelista appealed to the public, not only to students, to help the police in crime prevention.

The public may do so, Evangelista said, by not using cellular phones while walking on the streets or while riding in a jeepney, or by not wearing jewelry.

In Cebu City, Mobile Patrol Group policemen were directed to regularly conduct patrols near the schools to check the establishments, particularly money-lending shops
and banks.

The police community relations section and police station chiefs were also directed to coordinate with the schools in their area of jurisdiction to help in security implementation.

CCPO Director Patrocinio Comendador said clashes between members of rival fraternities or gangs are expected to occur, that’s why they need to beef up police visibility in areas identified as the lair of fraternities and gangs. (JST)
