Palace transfers holiday to June 9
THANKS to the Arroyo administration’s “holiday economics” policy, students will get one more day of freedom before school obligations start.
Instead of June 12, the regular Independence Day holiday will be marked on Monday, June 9.
President Arroyo’s Proclamation 1463, issued last Feb. 18, makes this change possible. The proclamation is based in turn on Republic Act 9492, which Arroyo signed last July 24, 2007.
That law amended provisions of the Administrative Code to allow the President to move regular and nationwide special holidays to other dates.
It also provides that holidays, except religious ones, will be moved to the nearest Monday unless otherwise modified by law, order or proclamation.
The transfer of the Independence Day celebration from June 12 to June 9 is also the reason classes for school year 2008-2009 will start on June 10, a day later than first scheduled.
The Department of Labor and Employment is tasked to draw up the guidelines, although typically, workers who report for work on a regular holiday are entitled to an additional 100 percent of their daily pay.
Moving holidays to the nearest Monday and creating long weekends was supposed to encourage domestic tourism, as it would give employees more time to travel home to the provinces. (EOB)
