Chalas eyes vengeance
ONE title was already handed out to Jessamel Singson in the Girls 12 division of the 13th Gullas Cup tennis competition, but the excitement is still mounting with the rest of the championship matches to be held today.
Singson won over Clarissa Mae Fuentes, 2-6, 6-2, 10-4, in the finals but the most awaited matches are still to be played, with Filipino-German netter Jacqueline Chalas highlighting one of the day’s most anticipated final.
Chalas is out for vengeance after having been clobbered by Sally Mae Siso in the finals of the Girls 18 division in a competition last week.
Chalas gets another shot at winning the title as she moved to the final round of the Girls 18 division after defeating, unsurprisingly, Sally Mae’s older sister, Sallydine, 6-1, 6-3, yesterday at the Casino Español tennis courts.
However, it is too early for Chalas to celebrate as she battles a familiar foe in today’s finals—her victim’s sister Sally Mae, who trampled her in the Prince finals last week.
The youngest of the tennis brood, Sally Mae, the country’s top player in the Girls 14 division, is gunning to repeat her feat last week and avenge her sister’s loss.
“I will win against her and I want it badly this time because she defeated my sister,” said Sally Mae.
Sally Mae is on a winning roll as she delivered the tournament’s first upset, clobbering Girls 18 No. 1 player Lovelie Soquiño in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-2
Two titles
The winningest player in the draw, eyes another twinkill as she also booked a seat to the final round of the Girls 14 division after clobbering Hannah Espinosa, 6-1, 6-1, in yesterday’ semis to arrange a finals showdown with Janice Cañete.
Cañete moved to the final round after pulling off a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Cheska Tabotabo.
Sallydine will still have a shot at winning a title as she arranged a titular showdown in the Girls 16, managing to move ahead with an impressive fashion as she trounced top-seeded player Cindy Gerapusco, 6-3, 6-3 in the semis.
She will be playing Anna Bienes in today’s finals, while her brother and Palarong Pambansa medalist, Bernardine Niño will also be gunning for a title after throwing out Prince Champion Kennex Abadia, 6-3, 6-4.
Niño will be taking on June Ryan Montalbo in today’s finals. Niño is also setting his sights on a double title as he was playing Amiel Aya-ay in the semis late yesterday afternoon. Whoever wins in this match will take the winner of the Kurt Gerapusco and Jayvee Canoy semifinal.
Also moving to the final round of their respective divisions were RJ
Singson who will face Christopher Encarnacion in the 10-Under unisex finals and Vince Mark Tabotabo, who is set to take on John Necesario in the final round in the 12-Under class.
Singson defeated Charles Kinaadman, 6-3, 5-7, 10-7, while Encarnacion defeated Jason Lauron, 6-1, 6-0.
Tabotabo, the top-seeded player in the Boys 12 division, won over Francis Alcantara, 6-3, 6-0, while Necesario ousted Ralph Juliane, 6-3, 6-0. (MCB)
