Local accents
By Archt. Karl A.E.F. Cabilao, UAP

IT'S funny how most of us crave to be foreign. This colonial behavior is often reflected within our own comfy, at times lofty, enclosures. Inside ostentatious European and American-inspired houses within a very Pinoy setting are furniture and ornamentations of the same alien origin.

Locally made merchandise is often considered as second-class and seen as just souvenirs for tourists. Such a shallow mental perspective on the fruit of the Filipino’s creative mind and laudable workmanship must be immediately revised.

These products have their unique appeal that sprouts from its attachments to nature, culture and tradition.

Recently, Be*U Cebu in One Mango Avenue had a soft launching of its products showcasing native handicrafts and furniture, interior accents and home decors perfect for the Filipino space.

All products featured are meticulously handcrafted by local manpower, through Sebastianne Handicrafts.

From capiz chandeliers to decorative candles, Cebuano ingenuity and craftsmanship were evident on every niche. It is a perfect spot not only for design professionals but also for art connoisseurs and tourists who crave to take home some of the local flavor.

Behind the native touch. Just like what is defined today as Philippine architecture, these pieces of furniture and decors also reflect the character of the local people. Yes, Pinoy architecture should go beyond what is just seen on the outside.

The strength and beauty of bamboo speak of the Pinoy’s resiliency against the economic crunch. The colors of capiz shells mirror the vibrant hospitality. The pretty shapes and rustic texture of wood, home decors reveal the Pinoy’s amiable and down-to-earth character.

The poignancy behind these accents will make everybody give a second look at them. It is hoped that it will help people see their native roots and eventually appreciate their culture.

The name of the gift center and bazaar (where you can see and buy these products) is perfect in waking up the patriotic spirit: Be U (You), Be Cebuano. Well, it is about time that Filipino products become more than just souvenir items.
