Barrita: Tommy’s new ride
By Eddie O. Barrita
Small Bites

CEBU City Mayor Tommy Osmeña said he wouldn’t mind riding a PUJ or a taxi to City Hall.

If he really wants to save energy, he can mount a horse and ride like a cowboy to City Hall.

But I’m wary he might be called a Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia copycat.

***

Mayor Tommy said he can save money if the Civil Service Commission will allow him to fire people who are not doing anything at City Hall.

“They don’t have to come to work, di ba? O, naka-save na ta,” he said.

Isn’t that a brilliant idea?

A P65 per liter gasoline looms in the horizon with skyrocketing crude prices in the world market.

It’s time to walk or jog to work.

But even running priest Fr. Robert Reyes got tired of running.

He was last seen sitting in front of the Supreme Court, meditating like a Buddhist monk minus the saffron robe.

Some lawmakers came up with a “bloodless way” in solving the rising costs of food and fuel – hold snap elections.

With soaring oil prices and rice prices at P51 a kilo in Mindanao, the country’s food basket, we might be holding monthly snap elections until the food and fuel crises are over.

Philippine science high incoming senior Gian Karlo Dapul, 16, won this year’s English-Speaking Union (ESU) public speaking competition held last month in London.

He bested 57 speakers from more than 30 countries, including the United States, England and Australia.

Here’s a proverbial silver lining shining through the dark clouds.

***

In his winning piece, Dapul said his country “has more problems than any Mathematics book” and needs an army of researchers to find solutions in advance to new challenges.

He said he wants to be part of the “army that would cross the new frontiers first.”

Now, who says youth is wasted on the young?
