Thursday, June 05, 2008 Girl shames boys in Superkarting series
SHE gave a new meaning to the phrase, ‘you drive like a girl’ as 10-year-old speed devil Kalyka Antoni Larrazabal Carcel overpowered the boys to claim the title in her engine class of the third leg of the Shell Superkarting Series at Kartzone Panagdait.
Not even old enough to get a student driver’s permit, Carcel, who studies at the Paref Southcrest school drove like a maniac in the race track to finally win a leg in this yearlong series.
Carcel has gotten tired of picking up after the boys with runners up finishes in the past races as she finally saw her window last Sunday to win the mini-ROK division.
“She was very determined to win. She was too fast, too furious in that race. It’s about time a girl wins in a boys’ game,” said proud father, Niel.
Carcel kept a steady pace consistently topping all the heats. She posted her best time of 28.3 seconds in the 15th lap of the final heat, to consistently top in all the heats with the boys eating her dust.
Her brother Juan Antonio, who was the champion in this division in the national finals last month, failed to make a podium finish when he suffered a major technical glitch after his battery wire came off, forcing him to the pitstop and losing a lot of time in the process.
Kali finished the course in the shortest possible time followed by Jette Calderon and JT Gullas.
In the other divisions, Patrick Gandionco won the ROK 125 class over Stefan Reroma and Kaine Gandionco. (MCB)
