Friday, June 06, 2008 Man stabs grandmother, aunt in Barangay Lorega
A 20-year-old man said to be high on rugby stabbed his grandmother and his aunt inside their house in Sitio Lawis, Barangay Lorega, Cebu City past noon yesterday.
Andrel Chan was arrested by Barangay Lorega tanods shortly after he stabbed his grandmother Sally Chan and his aunt Gaudiosa Labrador. A Mobile Patrol Group team later arrived and helped tanods in arresting Andrel.
While there were reports that Andrel stabbed his kin when he was awaken after a cat jumped on him, his family, however, put the blame on the rampant selling of rugby and proliferation of illegal drugs in their area.
“Ambot unsay tan-aw ana niya sa iyang apuhan? Iring tingali (Maybe he thought his grandmother was a cat),” said one of Andrel’s relatives who trooped to the Homicide Section.
When asked by reporters if he uses drugs, Andrel said “blow,” which he said is the street name of rugby solvent.
Andrel, however, appeared to be “disoriented” that PO1 Michael Codaste was having a hard time taking down information about his background.
Gaudiosa was stabbed in the right part of her waist while Chan was hit in her abdomen. They were both taken to Cebu City Medical Center for treatment.
Jose Amodia, one of the responding barangay tanods and an uncle of Andrel, turned over the six-inch knife allegedly used in the stabbing to the Homicide Section.
Amodia said he was disappointed with what Andrel did, saying Sally has long been serving as the suspect’s guardian.
Andrel’s mother is in jail for a drug-related offense.
Sally and Andrel were scheduled to leave for Oriental Negros tomorrow for the latter to continue his studies. (JST)
