Monday, June 09, 2008 Lapu wants Malacañang to move Charter Day fete
JUNE 17 was the day Lapu-Lapu was granted its Charter as a component city of Cebu Province, but to have a longer weekend the City Council wants Malacañang to declare June 16 a non-working holiday for the city.
City Councilor Damian Gomez, who chairs the finance committee, said he sees no legal hindrance to the request because the President can move a holiday celebration under Malacanang’s rationalization of holiday program.
“It is not prudent to have a break up schedule of rest,” he said in endorsing his resolution, which the City Council approved en masse.
Among the several activities that the city has lined up for the week-long celebration is the giving of awards to the top 20 taxpayers in the city for the years 2006 and 2007 and top performers from among the City Hall employees and department heads.
Production
Gomez, who used to work in one of the locators at the Mactan Economic Zone (Mez), said moving the non-working holiday on the 16th is advantageous to export oriented companies because they can schedule their production well.
Lapu-Lapu, originally Opon town, was made into a component city of Cebu Province through the enactment of Republic Act 3134 in 1961.
Last year, its status was elevated into a highly urbanized city through a plebiscite.
Mayor Arturo Radaza said the giving of awards to people in the private sector is one way of encouraging them to pay their taxes religiously. (AIV)
