Teachers in short supply in Region 7, DepEd says

WHILE Central Visayas needs more public school teachers, a few are nowhere to be found a day before the opening of classes.

Assistant Director Recaredo Borgonia said that some teachers were still on leave, which poses a problem because the Department of Education (DepEd) is even
supposed to have more.

Because some teachers are not around, the organization of classes, he said, would be difficult, especially that retired teachers have not yet been replaced.

He also mentioned the need for teachers employed by local government units (LGUs) to renew their contracts as another problem.

“Some teachers were hired by their LGUs, so…(their services) have to be renewed. And that is a process that also takes time,” he said.

DepEd 7 Director Carolino Mordeno has instructed all schools to be ready and to coordinate with the LGUs to ensure a smooth opening of classes tomorrow.

“We have instructed all superintendents to conduct a coordination meeting with all local government units, (and agencies) such as (the) DILG, LTO, PNP, DTI…. I’m sure they did that. We just hope that everything is order,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.

Mordeno added that to ensure student safety, school superintendents should likewise communicate with barangay officials for tanods to serve as school guards.

He hoped that the DepEd would not receive any report on teachers collecting fees from students.

“We ask them (teachers) to give their commitment and exercise competence in their work,” Borgonia said.

Last June 2, the central office announced the opening of DepEd’s Balik Eskwela Information and Action Center to address requests, queries and complaints regarding school policies.

DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapus has directed all regional directors and school division superintendents to designate two action officers.

All identified concerns will be coordinated with the central office.

The public can reach the action center by calling the national hotline 636-1663, texting 0919-4560027, or by sending DEPED FDBK to 2622 for both
Smart and Globe users.

Concerns can also be e-mailed to action@deped.gov.ph. (EPB)
