Erroneous books not in Region 7 schools

SOCIAL Studies books with errors will not be used by students in Central Visayas this school year.

Department of Education (DepEd) 7 Director Carolino Mordeno said that the books are still up for distribution.

“The region has not yet received the books since they still have to be distributed,” said Mordeno.

The Social Studies book in question, Asya: Pag-usbong ng Kabihasnan, has referred to Taiwan was a country separate from the People’s Republic of China, which is in violation of the one-China policy that the Philippine Government upholds.

“I think they (Central Office) are doing something about the error,” added Mordeno.

Shipment

In late April this year, Chinese customs authorities have seized one shipment of about 400,000 copies of the textbooks and threatened to destroy them unless they were corrected.

Last Saturday, Chinese customs released the shipment after the book’s printers, Ningbo Binbin Stationary Company, placed a sticker of the Great Wall of China and Asian Temples on the cover of the books to cover the map that identified Taiwan as a country in East Asia.

While DepEd 7 expects the books to arrive in September, Mordeno said that they will let the DepEd Central Office decide on what to do with the erroneous books.

Mordeno hopes that DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapus would immediately address the issue and have the books corrected. (EPB)
