SRFC beats Barili for UP Centennial Cup title

IN A a neck-to-neck clash, the veteran San Roque Football Club edged the Barili FC, 1-0, in the Men’s Open finals of the exhilarating University of the Philippines Centennial Cup at the UP Cebu College football grounds.

In the first half both teams were equally matched at both ends and went into halftime scoreless.

Six minutes after the restart, Barili FC committed a crucial mistake with one of its defenders charged with a holding foul in the penalty area.

SRFC’s Nelson Eco was chosen to do the penalty kick and he successfully struck the ball past through the Barili FC goalkeeper.

Things got heated after goal with Ryan Bordalba getting sent out after hitting a Barili FC player.

But even down to eight players SRFC stilled showed stifling defense as Barili FC failed to capitalize their advatange.

Earlier the semifinals, SRFC overcame No To Drugs, 4-5, in a sudden death shoot out after both teams were tied at 1 apiece at regulation, while Barili FC overwhelmed the organizing team Uptown United, 3-1, also in a penalty shoot out.

On the other hand, in the Women’s Open category, the Uptown United Invitational Cup champion University of San Carlos was victorious over Ormoc FC, 2-1 in their championship match.

USC started out strong with a quick goal from Rene Songalia in the second minute.

Apple Barinan closed out the game with the winning goal in the waning minutes of the game.

USC was undefeated in the in the eliminations and edged out Guts, 1-0, in the semifinals. (EKA)
